Heterotopic Pancreas

Abstract
The Heterotopic pancreas is defined as the presence of pancreatic tissue lacking anatomical and vascular continuity with the main body of pancreas. Its incidence has been reported as widely ranging from 0.55 per cent to 13.7 per cent in autopsy
studies
and one in every five hundred upper abdominal laparotomies. It may produce clinically significant symptoms but relieved by simple excision.
We have experienced 17 cases of heterotopic pancereatic tissue during the 10 year period from 1981 through 1990. 15 of 17 were found incidentally during the operation caused by other primary disease, and 2 of 17 caused symptomatic submucosal
tumor
and
heterotopic pancreatic tissue per se made and exploratory laparotomy. The ratio of male ot female was 1.1:1 and sixth decade showed the highest incidence (35.3%). The most common complaint was intermittent epigastric pain (70%). and maybe caused
by
not
the heterotopic pancreas but the primary disease of the patient. The most common site of heterotopic pancreatic tissue was upper jejunum (47%). The most common histologic location of the heterotopic pancreatic tissue was the submucosal layer. The
ize of
the lesions ranged from 0.7 cm to 2.8 cm in diameter (mean : 1.4cm) and 11 of 17 cases were less than 1.5 cm in diameter. The associated pathologies were stomach cancer. choledochal cyst, annular pancreas and imperforate anus.
